Are leafhoppers common on Rising Sun Redbud

(Question)

I have this tiny long green insect (about 3mm) on the underside of my Rising Sun Redbud leaves. From my research, it appears to look very similar to a leafhopper. Are leafhoppers common on Redbuds and in Ontario. What would you recommend to get rid of them. Thank-you

Thank you for contacting Toronto Master Gardeners regarding your ‘Rising Sun’ Redbud tree (Cercis canadensis ‘Rising Sun’) and leafhopper infestation. An excellent source of information on leafhoppers is a paper by The Missouri Botanical Garden which may help you decide on your course of action.

My own large Sunburst Locust (Gleditsia triacanthos var. inermis Suncoletree) has these nuisance pests each early summer season which annoy us for a couple of weeks and then they are gone for another year. So in keeping with The Missouri Botanical Garden, we Live with the Pests.
