Importing Begonia Tubers from England

(Question)

Dear Master Gardener, I, perhaps foolishly, ordered a Blackmore & Langdon begonia from the UK – something I’ve always wanted. The friendly owner emailed to ask for an Import Permit. A quick google search made it clear that obtaining one might be next to impossible. Just thought I’d ask the experts if it’s easier than it looks or not worth the trouble and expense for one tuber, no matter how special.

Thanks in advance for any assistance,

Thank you for contacting Toronto Master Gardeners.

Nothing is foolish, sky is the limit…

Unfortunately we don’t have experience in the field of plants importation.

To know how to import your plant from the UK, we recommend you to read carefully this article from Canadian Food Inspection.

Each product is governed by specific import requirements. The CFIA’s Automated Import Reference System (AIRS) is a searchable database on the Agency’s website that you can use to view the import requirements that apply to the plant or plant product you want to import.

You may ask your nursery to understand how they manage their importation.

Good luck !
