lilac under a big tree

(Question)

I had a large tree removed this spring. Under it is a lilac bush which is growing, but is spindly and lacking vigour. What should I do?

(Answer)

You should prune your lilac if the branches are libel to be damaged in the wind, but also to encourage new growth. Take care to only prune about 1/3 of the branches back to the stem.  Fertilizing the lilac with compost or manure, after gently tilling the surface of the soil if it is compacted from when the large tree was taken down, will also help your shrub to rejuvenate.
