Plant ID Purpleleaf Chokecherry

(Question)

Please identify this shrub growing in a sunny location. The foliage is dark green on new growth, turning to a dark burgundy in the spring, summer and fall.

(Answer)

The plant in question appears to be a purpleleaf chokecherry, (Prunus virginiana ‘Schubert’). If so,  it has the benefit of being a cultivar of a North American native tree, and thus good for supporting insects and birds in our gardens. It’s very desirable to have native plants in your garden.
