Poplar Cuttings

(Question)

Hi,

I was wondering where I can get specific species of poplar (cuttings). Is it permitted to get a cutting from a public park?

(Answer)

While there are many articles about growing poplars from cuttings there are few to none on where to get them. Unless you have a friend or neighbour with poplar trees willing to let you take cuttings you may have to resort to buying seedlings at a local nursery.

As for taking cuttings in a public park, that is not a good idea. First of all, unless you are an arborist you could harm the tree and secondly, it’s against the law. Trees situated on City parkland are protected under the Parks By-law which prohibits and regulates certain activities occurring either on or adjacent to City parkland which may impact existing trees.

Examples of activities that are prohibited include:

  • Tapping of maple trees
  • Injury of a tree or any part of a tree, or removal of any tree situated in a park, without the written approval of the General Manager of Parks, Forestry and Recreation
  • Installation of decorative lighting in trees in parks, without the written approval of the General Manager of Parks, Forestry and Recreation
