Replacing our City Tree

(Question)

The city tree in our yard is being taken down since it has partially rotted and is a danger to the neighbourhood. I am wondering if we can chose the species of tree that will replace it. We do not want a random tree placed on our property. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you

(Answer)

Generally when the city removes a sick or dying tree they leave contact information for Parks, Forestry and Recreation as well as a list of appropriate replacement trees for the site.  The list is based on the type of soil on your property and the available space.  Home owners can then choose their top two or three preferences.  The city makes an effort to plant the home owners’ preferred species.  For contact information for Parks, Forestry and Recreation  please review the following link or call 311.
