Birds Destroying Sumac Heads

My sumac heads are destroyed by Starlings every year. They don’t do this in the wild. Is there a non toxic spray to deter them?

Aren’t Sumac heads attractive? Unfortunately, they are equally attractive to birds and humans, as you have discovered. Rather than a spray, the most effective ways of deterring birds are with light and sound.

One solution is to tie shiny strips of Mylar or foil tape so that they flutter around the bushes. Or you  can use aluminum foil pie plates or old CDs. In all cases, the birds are disturbed by the movement and light flashes that result.

Some people have found that keeping a radio on nearby will keep the birds away also … but that might keep you away as well, and may also disturb your neighbours.
