Castor oil plant or castor bean plant are common names for the species Ricinus communis. Although the oil of the seeds is safe for consumption, the seed itself is very poisonous to people, animals and insects. The seeds should be started indoors in early April. Transplant into the garden when all risk of frost has passed. In our climate they should be treated as annuals.
