Overwintering coneflowers

(Question)

I live in Toronto zone 6 and I was wondering how to protect my new coneflowers that I recently planted. Since their roots haven’t had time to get established yet I was wondering if I could cover them with styrofoam huts over the winter to protect them

(Answer)

Congratulations on adding the beautiful coneflower (Echinacea) to your garden. No particular extra care is needed for this hardy perennial. For its first winter you could deadhead the plants and cut them back to half their height and just mulch the soil around with leaves. In future years you may wish to leave the flowerheads in place as a source of food for birds and interest in the winter landscape.
