This plant was donated to our Horticultural Society plant sale with no ID. I live in the Niagara region of Southern Ontario.
The leaves are alternate and toothed. New stem growth is bright red, with upper leaves having red veins. Leaves are about 3cm wide and 6cm long.
I wonder if it could be a beech tree but have not seen red on those.
Can anyone help me?
It can be difficult to tell when a tree or shrub seedling is small. It looks like your donated specimen may be a Chokecherry (Prunus virginiana). Some information on the Chokecherry may be found on the Ontario trees website by clicking this link:
