I think I have sod webworms, which look like tiny moths flying over my lawn. How can I control these?
To make sure that these are sod webworms, use 2 teaspoons of liquid dish soap in 1 gallon of water and pour water over a spread of 4 feet of grass. In about 10 minutes, the insects should appear at the surface and a careful inspection between grass blades should reveal them.
To help control them you can use insecticidal soap or Dipel (Bacillus Thuringiensis) (this is one brand – there may be others- I suggest that you speak with the horticulturalist at your garden centre). Use exactly according to package directions. Either agent should be applied 3 or 4 times over the next month.
I also recommend that you contact a local lawn care company with experience in organic practices.
A helpful resource is the University of Tennessee’s Sod Webworms on Turfgrass.
