How to root pussy willows

(Question)

I live at Coxwell and Gerrard in an urban forest. I have some pussy willows that I bought at my local grocery which are starting to develop roots.  I’d like advice on how to encourage the roots and plant them out such that they will thrive in my garden.  I’ve added a pinch of blood meal to their water and prepared a planting site amended with blood meal.  Happy Gardening!

Hi, Susan,

As you can see from the roots in your container, willows have a great determination to reproduce! No special care is now needed to encourage roots except to select the right spot for your pussy willow. The only uncertainty will be which species of willow you have (the native pussy willow, for example, is Salix discolor), which will determine its mature size and cultural requirements. They generally prefer some sun and consistently moist but well-drained soil for best catkin production – which is why you want to grow them.

Pussy willows can grow to a significant size, so best place it where it has room to spread out without obstructing traffic.

Happy gardening!
