Identification of a dwarf lilac

I’ve moved to a property that has this shrub. It’s approximately 3-4′ around and has purple flowers in the spring. It reminds me of a lilac tree.

Dear gardener, thank you for contacting the Toronto Master Gardeners.

You guessed correctly that what you have is a Dwarf lilac (Syringa ). Growers have hybridized several types of lilacs to be used in smaller spaces or as hedges.

From the picture, it seems you have a Syringa meyeri  ‘Palibin’ which has a lovely fragrance. To encourage flowering for next year, you may want to consider removing the flower stalks after they have finished blooming. Otherwise this is a very low maintenance shrub.
