Japanese Maple Die Back

Our beautiful 20 year old tree suffered some winter kill which we removed. Now, additional branches are dying and I’m afraid the tree is in trouble. Can you recommend someone who can properly prune and/or treat the tree?

Many thanks.

Many trees in the Toronto area suffered damage during the recent winter; and unfortunately many trees are still showing the effects. Your 20 year-old Japanese maple is obviously showing signs of stress and you need professional advice to ensure that it will continue to thrive. A certified arborist would be able to assess the tree and offer proper advice on what steps may need to be taken in caring for it.

The best way to find a certified arborist is to access the International Society of Arborists through their web-site–<www.isaontario.com/>.     As you will notice, there are many qualified and certified arborists; Toronto Master Gardeners is unable to make any specific recommendations.

With professional attention, you will be given the best advice to help your beautiful Japanese maple.

Thank you for getting in touch with Toronto Master Gardeners; please do no hesitate to contact us if you have any other concerns.
