lawn top dressing

(Question)

This fall, I plan to resurrect my lawn by aerating, top dressing, and reseeding. In the articles that I have referenced, “good quality compost” rather than peat moss is recommended. Is the free compost available from the city considered “good quality”. Thanks!

(Answer)

I have no reference material that states the nutrient composition of the city compost. From personal use I can say that it often has larger wood chips mixed into it which might be difficult to spread on an existing lawn. You should top dress with a triple mix soil blend which will have a much finer texture. Bagged compost also has a finer texture and therefore would be more suitable.
