Orchid Bark Mix for Repotting*

(Question)

Hello TMG,

I’m so glad this site exists. I am having some trouble finding orchid bark mix to repot two of my phalaenopsis orchids. All of the major stores I go to (Canadian Tire, Home Depot) seem to have the soil mix for orchids but I just want the bark chips.

I see this company has it but I can’t seem to find where this is sold in Toronto:

Better-Gro® Phalaenopsis Mix

Do you know of anywhere where I can get a bulk bark chips? I have two small plants so I feel like that bag would be too much for me, but I’d be willing to get it. I didn’t think it would be so hard to find random wood chips!

I live in Downtown Toronto so any suggestions in that area would be welcomed. I don’t have a car but if something on the outskirts is fairly accessible by TTC I’d go there as well.

Thanks for your help,

Thank you for contacting Toronto Master Gardeners in your quest for potting bark.

The Southern Ontario Orchid Society https://soos.ca/ would be an excellent source of information for all things orchid-related. They also have an annual show in February at the Toronto Botanical Garden, (777 Lawrence Ave.E at Leslie Street) with many vendors who sell soils, containers, clips, etc.  The date for the next show hasn’t yet been posted, but it’s usually around Valentine’s day.

We wish you success in your quest and with your repotting.
