I have a few mystery trees or perhaps shrubs that has berries on it resembling pin cherries but before I go and pick I want to make sure I’m right and this isn’t something poisonous. Can someone let me know?
Thanks for your question. Based on your photo, it looks like you most likely have a type of honeysuckle bush, possibly Morrow’s honeysuckle (Lonicera morrowii) or Tatarian honeysuckle (Lonicera tatarica). The leaves in your photo appear to have smooth edges and slightly rounded tips, and the fruit appears in pairs, originating from the leaf axils. We would not see this in the case of pin cherry (Prunus pensylvanica), which would have toothed leaves with very sharp tips, and fruit in clusters of 5-7.
To answer your question as to whether the fruit are poisonous – in the case of the above-mentioned honeysuckles, yes, the fruit are poisonous and you should avoid consuming them.
