roots of ornamental blue spruce

(Question)

I have an ornamental blue spruce in front of my living room window…(about 10 yrs old) facing south. This is getting quite tall (maybe 5 ft with a large trunk. It is approximately 5 ft from house. Is there a problem with roots from this tree spreading.?????

(Answer)

As to the SPREAD of the roots damaging weeping tiles or house,  blue spruce roots are usually not deeper than two feet; they may surface on your lawn, but are unlikely to damage house or tiles. If you wish to control the root spread of the tree, you could minimally root-prune the spruce in the fall every other year. For more information on blue spruce (Picea pungens) you could consult Gardening with Conifers by Adrian Bloom or other books about conifer cultivation.
