I forgot to put soil around my roses (tender hybrid teas located along south side of house) for winter protection. What can I do now in the middle of January.
This location provides more winter protection from the wind but will contribute to a more drastic temperature change increasing the damaging thaw-freeze cycle. In order to protect the roses from this cycle they need insulating material. Keep the snow on the roses and mound up soil or compost over the snow to a depth of 25 to 30 cm. Make sure that when the snow melts the insulating material will remain over the base of the rose to protect the crown or bud union. Try to hand pack it so it stays in place.
