Scentless Viola odorata

(Question)

My Viola odorata are not producing any  scent and I wonder if something could be done about it

There are two reasons why Viola odorata may not produce scent:

1) Violas interbreed freely. If your Viola odorata have interbred with our native violets, which are not fragrant, they may not come true to type and may loose their fragrance.

2) Your Viola odorata might be not the actual species, but a Viola odorata cultivar. Cultivars are bred e.g. for increased flower size, more sophisticated flowers, and for special colours. During this process the characteristic scent again might get lost.
