Tiny caterpillars

(Question)

Hey folks, first time I’ve ever seen tiny green caterpillars in my garden, and really hurting my Mountain mint and Columbines.
Besides removing the worms by hand, what else can be done, and does anyone know what these little caterpillars are?
Thanks,

Thank you for contacting Toronto Master Gardeners.

Small green caterpillars could be any number of butterfly, moth or sawfly larvae.

Hand picking is the most environmental technique though if the infestation is too large you may want to try insecticidal soaps.

Without a picture it is difficult to identify which larvae you are dealing with. If you can collect up a few in a bag, your local nursery should be able to help you identify them. Once identified it is easier to choose an effective method to eradicate them. Different products work with different pests.

Good Luck.
