Tree or shrub identification – Green Ash

(Question)

This tree is 6 1/2 feet tall and grows in a partly shady area. It is in good moist soil and we are in zone five. It has miraculously sprung up from the middle of our flower bed and has no berries or flowers on it yet.

Thanks for contacting Toronto Master Gardeners.  This sapling is a Fraxinus pennsylvanica (green ash).  This fast growing tree reaches sixty feet at maturity.  It has small winged fruit.  These native trees frequently found in southern Ontario. Currently the seedlings are showing up all over the place.  It prefers moist rich soil and tolerates shade so your garden has the ideal growing conditions for it.  Fraxinus pennsylvanica trees are vulnerable to ash borer.
