Unknown wild flower – Garlic mustard

(Question)

Can you tell me what the name of this wild flower is? It was seen in only one spot in the Charles Sauriol conservation area (along the Don River just south of Lawrence ). Each single-stemmed plant with heart-shaped leaves was about 11-12 inches in height.

(Answer)

This plant looks like Garlic mustard, Alliaria petiolata. This is an invasive species from Europe that resembles some of our Ontario natives. Crush it in your hands and if you smell the ‘garlic’ then¬† it most certainly is this invasive.
