I am looking for a fast growing vine to be able to have privacy. Or an evergreen that can face north and one that is fast growing!
A lovely climbing plant which will provide a lot of privacy, although not immediately, is Japanese climbing hydrangea (Hydrangea anomala subsp. petiolaris), which has white flower clusters in June, which are attractive throughout the year. It grows fairly quickly, requires no support and will grow in shady conditions. For more immediate cover, you could plant the annual morning glory (Ipomoea tricolor). Another suggestion, also a fast grower and a perennial is the honeysuckle Lonicera x heckrottii ‘American Beauty’, which is semi-evergreen, although it will likely lose its leaves in southern Ontario. It has purple to deep pink buds open to golden yellow tubular flowers and is loved by hummingbirds. If you don’t care whether there are flowers I suggest Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia), which is self supporting, covers the walls of my garage (in the shade, although facing east) and is a beautiful red in the fall.
