What ate my plants

(Question)

I was wondering what might have eaten my plant. How should I prevent the problem?
Thank you .

(Answer)

It probably is  a squirrel that has made that mess. They are not interested in eating your plants but they easily recognize the soft soil of newly planted seeds or plants and dig in there to see if anything delicious, such as a nut, has been planted. What you can do is cover the soil with screening if you have just planted seeds. When I plant small things in particular, I check them a few times a day to see if they have been uprooted by squirrels and replant and water lightly. You would do the same with your larger plant. I find after a week or so that the planting is sufficiently old the squirrels no longer target it.
