Sourcing Red and Yellow Varieties of Monks Hood?

(Question)

I live and garden in Oakville. The blue variety of Monks Hood grows very well in my garden and produce beautiful blue flowers late in the fall. I would like to add the yellow and red varieties but I am having difficulty finding a grower who sells them.

Thank you for contacting Toronto Master Gardeners.

Monk’s Hood, Aconitum,  is a beautiful plant that does grow well in Toronto area gardens.

One does need to be aware, however, that all parts of the plant are very poisonous to all animals and humans and it takes very little to cause serious illness and potentially death. It should not be where animals or children will have access to it and not near any edible plants. It should always be handled with gloves. Any waste from the plant should be disposed of carefully.

Toronto Master Gardeners does not recommend places to purchase plants. Your best bet is to visit some local nurseries and see if they will be bringing them in in the Spring. You maybe able to work something out with them.
