We’d like to create a privacy screen and would like to use bamboo (Phyllostachys) to achieve that effect. Can you recommend any shrubs/trees/grass that would complement the bamboo? Thank you.
You don’t say where you live or what kind of conditions you have regarding light or soil but, assuming that you are in the Toronto area, here is some information on shrubs, trees and grasses that has been put together by Toronto Master Gardeners in answer to other gardeners with similar questions:
Shrubs: Ornamental Shrubs for Various Light Conditions: A Toronto Master Gardeners Guide at at https://www.torontomastergardeners.ca/index.php/factsheet/ornamental-shrubs-for-sun-a-toronto-master-gardeners-guide/ suggests dozens of ornamental shrubs for sun and shade plus information on location, uses and maintenance.
Trees: Eastern redbud (Cercis canadensis), serviceberry (Amelanchier spp.) and varieties of dogwood (Cornus spp.) are excellent choices for small trees that will tolerate shade. All of these smaller trees have interesting foliage and flowers.
Grasses: There are many wonderful ornamental grasses to choose from but selecting the right plants for your growing conditions is important. Many grasses prefer full sun; some are invasive so look for clump forming varieties. Most grasses offer interesting seed heads in the fall and can be left on to enjoy all winter and cut back in the spring. Select grasses that hardy to at least zone 6 for Toronto.
