This year the number of monarchs overwintering in Mexico hit an all-time low. Severe weather and the disappearance of milkweed (the plant they depend on) along their migratory path are making an already epic journey downright dangerous.
In Toronto, the David Suzuki Foundation is hosting a special IMAX® 3D screening of the award-winning film Flight of the Butterflies at the Scotiabank Theatre on Saturday, April 12. Tickets are available here.
In addition, the Foundation is planting a milkweed corridor through the city of Toronto. The Foundation is selling milkweed plants for $5 each as part of the Homegrown National Park Project. In addition to planting them yourself, you have the opportunity to become a butterfly “block captain” and inspire your neighbours, local schools, stores and churches to do the same. You can also donate to the #GotMilkweed campaign and the volunteer Homegrown Park Rangers will plant milkweed on your behalf in schoolyards and parks throughout the Homegrown National Park area in Toronto.
