Bilberry*

(Question)

Hello, can you tell me where I might purchase fresh bilberries?

(Answer)

Thank you for contacting the Toronto Master Gardeners with your inquiry.

Bilberries, Vaccinium myrtillus commonly known as Wild European Blueberry or Whortleberry and blueberries Vaccinium sp. are often confused in everyday life. Both have a dark bluish, smooth skin and are similar in size, the bilberry being slightly smaller. Bilberry is native to Europe and the British Isles, unlike our wild blueberries Vaccinium sp. which grow in various places around the world; bilberries are difficult to grow and are thus seldom cultivated.

From my research I found that bilberry extract is sold on line in tablets, capsules, and the berries are sold dried and as a powder. Tea made from the leaves is also available.

My suggestion would be to visit a reputable health food store, they may be able to recommend a source of fresh bilberry.
