House plant

(Question)

This plant has been cut and replanted many times. We do not know how to properly care for it. It was my mother in law’s before she passed. It never goes thick just high and thin where it falls over I’ve taken 3 cuttings last time in hopes of having them support each other. It used to be in a sun room. We however do not have a sun room. Our only window faces WSW. Currently it’s in out hallway without much direct sunlight.

Thank you for contacting the Toronto Master Gardeners with your inquiry concerning your ailing Dieffenbachia plant.

Dieffenbachia possesses beautiful variegated oval leaves. The brighter the lighting in your home the more variegated the leaves will be. Under ideal conditions, dieffenbachia can reach five feet tall with leaves that stretch three feet long.

Dieffenbachia is a tropical plant that prefers warm, moist conditions. It prefers diffused sunlight or partial shade. It thrives when the ambient temperature ranges between 17-24C. Only water dieffenbachia when the top one to two inches of soil has dried out. When you water, use lukewarm water and soak the soil. Let the pot drain well. Fertilize this plant once every one to two months.
