Planting Perennials

(Question)

Good afternoon Toronto Master Gardeners.

I just have a quick question. I’ve purchased a number of perennials and would like to plant them. My wife says to wait until the May long weekend but I looked up the Farmers almanac page and I don’t see any signs of frost in the forecast. We live near Jane and Wilson. I think it’s ok but just thought to ask the experts. Many thanks.

Thank you for contacting Toronto Master Gardeners. The ideal time to plant perennials is spring, so now is the time to get them in the ground. The longstanding adage of waiting until the May long weekend is generally in reference to annuals and vegetables, which are much less tolerant of frost and more susceptible to cold damage if planted too early.
