25-30 year old cedar – From Delta, B.C.

(Question)

I live in BC specifically in delta, we have a cedar hedge that is over 20 years old in our front yard. We’re planning to pour a concrete slab for a front patio/ small basketball area for the kids and are looking for information to not negatively impact the hedge. How far from the hedge should we have the slab, and to install a basket ball hoop we would need to dig a hole that is roughly 20×20 and about 40” deep, could that potentially damage the root system for these cedars if the base for the pole is against the hedge (1-2 ft from it) They are quite important to us and we want to avoid damaging them. Thanks you for your time.

Thank you for contacting Toronto Master Gardeners about your lovely cedar hedge and landscaping plans. The climate, soil, by-laws and other considerations can be quite different from that in eastern Ontario. For that reason, we are unable to advise you on your cedars and project planning. Master Gardener groups are generally specific to their regional areas for “ASK a Master Gardener” questions. You may wish to explore various resources available in your area such as: the Greater Vancouver chapter of Master Gardeners of BC, your local call-before-you-dig resource, local landscapers or landscape association, any relevant Delta City By-laws, local horticultural society, etc.

Hopefully this will give you further information and referrals on your project.

All the best on adding this family oriented addition to your landscaping.
