Aggressive Groundcover*

(Question)

How can I get rid of my lovely lily of the valley. It is taking over my periwinkle and everything else. Goutweed is a problem too.

(Answer)

Thank you for contacting the Toronto Master Gardeners.

Lily of the Valley (Convallaria majalis) and Goutweed (Aegopodium podagraria) are effective groundcover plants because both spread by vigorous networks of rhizomes in addition to seed. The former may be a nuisance, but the latter is a true invasive. Getting rid of them will take time and patience. Please refer to a previous TMG post on how to remove Goutweed. The same principles outlined in the post also apply to removing Lily of the Valley.

Good luck!
