Bamboo ginger Alpinia

A few weeks ago I bought a plant labelled “bamboo ginger” but no additional information came with the pot. It was located under a “part-shade” sign at the place of purchase. I haven’t managed to find information online about what to expect from it or its growing needs, nor have I been able to get through to the supplier. Any chance you can provide guidance for its outdoor planting, midtown Toronto? It’s currently~18″ tall, photo below. Thank you!

The plant you bought is the Variegated Shell Ginger, Alpinia zerumbet ‘Variegata’ which is sold as an annual in Canada.  In the landscape it will grow to approximately 4 feet tall by 4 feet wide and is a good choice for borders or containers.  It will thrive in sun to partial shade conditions.  The larger nurseries in the Greater Toronto Area are may stock these specimens.  Here is some more information about the Variegated Shell Ginger:
