I live in an apartment and have purchased a small bonsai, a juniper, and want to know more about caring for it.
If the juniper is a native plant or one that is normally outdoors, it will need a dormant period during the winter but one must take care not to allow the roots to be exposed to a temperature below 6 degrees C. Normally outdoor bonsais are placed outdoors for the winter but protected from excessive cold. Check with your vendor to confirm winter requirements for the specific species of juniper. The Toronto Bonsai Society has monthly meeting at the TBG, every second Monday as well as an annual show in October. They also provide information for beginners. Note that there is an excellent Gardening Guide to Bonsai Care on this website. You can see it here. Also see www.torontobonsai.org beginners corner for frequently asked questions by Bob Wilcox
