Calla Lillies

(Question)

A friend just gave me a ‘black’ calla lily plant. Can it be planted outdoors? Will it survive the winter in Thornhill?

Thank you for contacting the Toronto Master Gardeners with your inquiry concerning Calla lilies.

Calla Lilies are hardy perennials in zones 7-10. Thornhill’s hardiness zone is 5 and as a result Calla lily would be considered a tender perennial in your area. Calla’s prefer to be planted in loose, well-drained soil in full sun. These plants can be grown in containers or planted in the garden. If you decide to plant your Calla in the garden bed you would need to dig up the rhizomes in autumn, usually after the first frost. Calla Lily Care in Winter describes the overwintering steps for these beautiful plants in colder climates.
