Cherry fruit fly control

(Question)

What is the best way to control and prevent cherry fruit flies from laying eggs in cherries?

They infested quite a few of my back yard cherries with eggs (and the worms/larvae that hatch from them) last summer (2019) and I’d like to prevent it this summer.

I’m at Shaw Street, Toronto. The cherries are Romance series cherries (Juliet, Romeo, Cupid).

(Answer)

Thank you for identifying the type of cherry trees you have. The European cherry fruit fly (ECFF) is a relatively new pest of Ontario cherries, first noted in Ontario in 2016. We advocate non-toxic solutions to this problem, and since the Romance cherry tree series you have in your back-yard are small and manageable  trees, you can hope to succeed by following the suggestions already available in a previous answer given on this website.
