Common Hornbeam Seedlings

(Question)

I am looking for Carpinus betulus seedlings – 2 to 3 feet in height to plant a hedge here in Toronto. Do you have any recommendations?

(Answer)

European or common hornbeam (Carpinus betulus), a deciduous tree that can also be used as a hedge, is hardy to zone 5.

We are not permitted to suggest where to purchase plants, but Landscape Ontario (under “Find a company”)  lists the names, contact information and websites of many of garden centres. I suggest you try calling a few, and if a particular nursery does not carry the hornbeam, ask for suggestions for other nurseries that might have the plants.

For additional information about the hornbeam as a hedge, search on our Toronto Master Gardeners – Ask a Master Gardener site using hornbeam as the search term– e.g., see “Renovating our Oakville city garden”.
