Thank you for contacting the Toronto Master Gardeners.

There are a number of factors to consider when selecting a tree for your site. Hardiness zone, soil conditions, access to water are important attributes that must be taken into account when selecting a plant of any kind, especially a tree. A newly planted trees require deep watering for at least the first two weeks until the roots become established.

The Ontario Tree Atlas has a huge list of trees (native and non-native) categorized in different ways and giving you mature height and hardiness zone and sun requirements. Another excellent resource is Ontario Trees and Shrubs

Some trees to consider are Canadian Hemlock, Balsam Fir, Serviceberry, Hackberry, Black Gum, Blue Beech and Yellow Birch.

When it is time for planting Landscape Ontario has an excellent Tree Planting Guide

Good luck with your project
