Diseased leaves in yard waste?

(Question)

A maple tree in my neighborhood has black spots on its leaves. Are they diseased? Should the dry leaves go into garbage or yard waste? I have a problem with black spot on a rose bush. Is it connected? What can I do to clear up the black spot on the roses?

(Answer)

Yes, the black spots on your maple leaves are caused by disease and you are right to ask about their disposal. It is best NOT to put them in your own compost but to bag them for City pick up. For the detailed answer we provided another inquirer, just click here.

As for the black spots on your roses, they are not the same as those on your maples, but are somewhat similar. And once again, we have provided a detailed answer for another gardener, which you will find here.
