Hellebore seeds

(Question)

Want a Canadian source from which to order reliable hellebore seeds.

(Answer)

Thank-you for contacting Toronto Master Gardeners with your question about sourcing hellebore seeds.

As a matter of policy, we do not recommend particular vendors or companies. We are usually able to offer some assistance by directing clients to internet search terms or sites such as Landscape Ontario (website ) where potential plant sources or garden centres are listed. Unfortunately, in this case, I have not been able to locate a site that lists perennial seed suppliers and my searches for hellebore seeds do not come up with any companies that ship to Canada. (I can find some US-and UK-based seed companies that carry hellebore seeds, but they do not deliver to Canada.)

I imagine that local growers and gardeners are exchanging seeds from their own plants, but it may be difficult to plug into this. Another issue is that many of the hellebore hybrids that have come onto the market in the last few years do not come true from seed. Indeed, this may be one of the reasons companies that sell other perennial seed are not offering hellebore seed. Hellebore seed does not remain viable for long after harvest in the summer so it is not a great candidate for dried seed sale. If you are anxious to get a start with hellebores, you may be better off buying some nursery plants.
