How to grow broccoli sprouts

(Question)

Can you please give suggestions on how to grow broccoli sprouts safely to prevent mold or E coli? I would like to start growing broccoli sprouts in mason jars. Is there a recommended way?

Thank you for your question.

Growing sprouts is an easy process that just requires good seeds and some everyday household items such as a Mason jar.

You may want to consider obtaining organic seeds that are specifically designed for sprouting or microgreens rather than a traditional vegetable seed which is developed to reach maturity and produce a full broccoli head.

The seeds should first be soaked in water and apple cider vinegar.  For example 1 tablespoon of seeds in one-half cup of water & 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar.  Soak for about 10 minutes and then drain and rinse with clean water.  This will sanitize the seeds to aid in preventing mold or E-Coli.

Place the seeds in the Mason jar and cover the seeds with water.  Place the lid on the jar and soak the seeds overnight.

Drain the Mason jar the next morning and then place the jar on its side on a counter or drain rack.  Rinse and drain the seeds twice a day with fresh water.

The seeds should germinate in just a few days.  Once the sprouts appear you can start enjoying them or wait until they start to turn slightly green.  Note that you may see fuzzy root hairs on the Broccoli sprouts which should not mistaken for mold.

Enjoy your sprouts.
