Thank you for contacting Toronto Master Gardeners about choosing an appropriate hydrangea shrub for your mostly shady garden.

Hydrangeas prefer to be grown in part shade/part sun in moist but well-drained soil. They are very popular shrubs and there are various iterations of the genus, including many that prefer a shady aspect. You will have great fun making your choice from among the many types be they rounded shrub-like, grown as a standard, or climb as a hardy vine.

Our Toronto Master Gardening Guides cover many aspects of hydrangea culture and maintenance which you will find here: https://www.torontomastergardeners.ca/?s=hydrangeas

https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/garden-how-to/gardening-by-zone/zone-5/zone-5-hydrangeas.htm is an article describing varieties that would be happy in your zone 5B garden.

We wish great success in choosing an hydrangea or two for your garden, and deriving much enjoyment from them for decades to come.
