Thank you for contacting the Toronto master gardeners with your inquiry.

What a terrific project to utilize your outdoor balcony space to grow vegetables. We receive numerous questions regarding where to source reliable seeds, starter plants. The following response is from one of our archived posts titled:  Organic vegetable seedlings and starter plants

There are many Nurseries in Ontario that specialize in herbs and vegetables, year round.

This is such a good question now that spring is in the air. Organic and heirloom seeds are readily available online and in stores but many of us appreciate the convenience of vegetable seedlings and we want to be sure that we are buying organically grown plants.  The interest in heirloom varieties is growing as well, and surely it won’t be long before organically grown options will be everywhere.

In the meantime, the best places to find organic vegetable plants are the many farmers’ markets in Toronto and environs.  Dufferin Grove Farmers’ Market, Wychwood Barns Farmers’ Market and Evergreen Brick Works Farmers’ Market are a few examples that come to mind.  A complete list of Ontario farmers’ markets is available here: https://www.farmersmarketsontario.com/index.cfm .

Here are some websites of local organic vegetable seed and plant suppliers around the GTA and slightly further afield:

I hope you have an enjoyable quest for vegetable seedlings this spring!’
