Norway Spruce growing zone/cones/sap

(Question)

I live in Fairfax, VA…zone 7. Our HOA is purchasing Norway Spruce trees. With global warming, are we going to be too warm for them to thrive?
Also will the female cones drip sap ( like the cones on a Pine tree does)?

Thank you for contacting the Toronto Master Gardeners.

With all the discussions of climate change occurring, your question prior to making a long-term commitment with tree planting is very timely.

The Norway Spruce (Picea abies) is part of the pine family, native to Europe. Zone 7 is the upper end of its tolerance, growing poorly further south. It is a very popular choice due to its shape, use as a wind break and deer tolerance. Perhaps your HOA could work with the local Extension Master Gardeners to find alternatives that will grow well now and in the future.
