Thank-you for contacting Toronto Master Gardeners with your question.

Last winter was particularly brutal. We have been hearing about many losses in our Toronto area gardens. Having said that, you may want to wait a little longer before declaring your grasses dead. They may just be very slow in starting this year due to the long, cold spring. It is common for warm season grasses to remain dormant until the spring bulbs are finishing and the ground is consistently warm. You did not mention the specific grasses you have in your garden but unless they are very marginally hardy, my guess is that they are alive but a bit late in emerging!

I am including links to some general information about ornamental grasses that you might find useful.
