(Question)
Is it safe to move an ostrich fern after it has grown ferns in mid may in zone 5b?
(Answer)
Hello – Native plant gardener and author, Lorraine Johnson recommends transplanting ferns, including ostrich fern in very early spring before the fronds uncoil or in late fall. Personally, if I was dividing a fern, I would wait for the fall but if I could dig and move the complete root ball and the fern was not completely leafed out I would move an ostrich fern in mid May.
For some general information on growing ferns, I’m including below a link to our Toronto Master Gardener guide ‘Hardy Garden Ferns’.
