Overwintering Summer Bulbs Without A Basement*

(Question)

Can gladiolus, acidanthera (peacock orchid) and oxalis (shamrocks) be stored in a refrigerator crisper over the winter? I can put them in a paper bag with peat moss before putting it in the crisper.

(Answer)

After checking out the probable temperature of most refrigerators (approx 40 deg F), if you follow proper lifting and drying procedures,  overwintering in a refrigerator should be fine.  That being said, do not place your stored bulbs in the elevated humidity area of your refrigerator (this is usually the crisper) as rotting may begin.
