Tree is turning red at the end of June! *

(Question)

There are three trees on my street that have turned red even though it is just June. I don’t know what type they are but it has very much confused me and I would like to know why this is happening.

(Answer)

You  are correct, a change in leaf colour usually occurs in the fall when the weather gets cooler, the days shorter and the tree prepares for the winter.

In this case, the early leaf change could be caused by a number of factors:

weather – drought (we have had so little rain this spring and summer) as well as drought in previous years

stress – such as the roots being covered by concrete, road salt, whipper snipper damage

insects or disease
