Yellow Wood Tree

(Question)

The city is putting a tree in my yard (city property). I want something small. They suggested a Yellow Wood. Do you recommend this tree for a small space? I read that the fruits are smelly. Is that true?

Thank you,

Thank you for contacting the Toronto Master Gardeners.

A tree is a long-term commitment, so it is important to make the right decision.

The yellow-wood tree (Cladrastis lutea) is listed in the city brochure as a medium sized tree. The female trees would have white fragrant  flowers and subsequently small, bean-like pods. Its use is described as an excellent small tree for residential lawns, particularly on small properties on a botanical garden site. As a member of the Legume family, the pods would be like a black locust pod. I am not finding information that the pods smell.
